Staying cool and hydrated during a summer walk

Summer walks can be great, but once temperatures climb, comfort and common sense matter more than distance.

Walk at the Cooler Times of Day

Early morning and later evening are usually more comfortable than the middle of the day. Shade from trees and buildings can also make a noticeable difference.

Hydrate and Dress Light

Bring water, choose lightweight breathable clothing, and use a hat and sunglasses for extra sun protection. A cooling towel can be useful when the air is hot and still.

Keep the Walk Flexible

If the heat is stronger than expected, shorten the route or take a shaded break. For a ready-to-go checklist, see 10 things to carry on a summer walk. For everyday footwear, read our guide to walking shoes for long daily walks.
