A portable water filter can be one of the smallest pieces of gear with the biggest consequences. The important question is not simply which filter is best. It is whether the filter matches the water source, group size, trip length and contaminants that may be present.

I separate these choices by job: a squeeze filter for moving light, a gravity bag for camp, a bottle-style filter for quick drinking and a pump for controlled collection. None should be treated as permission to drink from any water that happens to look clear.

Best Two-Burner Camping Stoves for Family Campsites

A two-burner stove changes campsite cooking from one-pot survival into a real meal. One burner can hold a pan while the other boils water, warms sauce or keeps breakfast moving. The difference between a good stove and a frustrating one usually appears in wind, low-heat control and the amount of room between the burners.

I compare these as family car-camping appliances, not ultralight backpacking stoves. Stable cookware support, predictable flame control, wind protection and practical cleanup matter more than shaving a few pounds.

Best Double Camping Mattresses for Couples Who Want Real Comfort

Cozy double sleeping area prepared inside a camping tent

Sharing one camping mattress sounds simple until one person rolls over, an edge collapses, or the bed slowly loses pressure before morning. A good double camping mattress needs more than thickness: it needs stable edges, enough width for two sleeping bags, insulation from the ground and a valve system that does not turn packing up into a wrestling match.

I look at these mattresses as car-camping beds, not backpacking pads. Comfort, support and sleep quality come first; packed size comes second. The four models below range from deep foam comfort to a more travel-friendly design, and each makes a different compromise.

Best Camping Cots for Comfortable Car Camping

Comfortable sleeping setup inside a camping tent

A camping cot can turn a rough night on the ground into a sleep setup that feels much closer to a real bed. The catch is that cots vary enormously in height, width, packed size, tension and setup effort, so the model that looks most impressive online may be the wrong one for your tent or vehicle.

When I compare camping cots, I care less about clever extras than the basics: enough room to change position, a stable frame, fabric that stays supportive and a design I would not dread setting up after dark. These four choices cover roomy comfort, familiar value, compact engineering and adjustable lounging without pretending that one cot is perfect for every camper.

Best 12V Portable Fridges for Camping and Road Trips

Portable cooler at a campsite for camping and road-trip food storage

Ice works until it melts, leaks, crushes the food underneath it, or sends you looking for another bag halfway through a trip. A 12V portable fridge solves that problem by using a compressor to keep food and drinks at a controlled temperature from a vehicle outlet, wall power or a compatible portable power source.

For car camping, road trips, RV travel and overlanding, the sweet spot is usually a fridge in the 40- to 46-litre range. That is large enough for a couple or small family to pack real meals without turning the cooler into something nobody wants to lift. The four models below take different approaches: premium efficiency, battery-ready smart features, dual-zone value and rugged simplicity.

Best Smart Telescopes for Backyard Stargazing and Easy Astrophotography

A traditional telescope can deliver an unforgettable view, but first-time owners often discover a steep learning curve: aligning the mount, finding a target, focusing in the dark, and keeping the object in view as Earth turns. A smart telescope handles most of that work automatically. Set it outside, connect a phone or tablet, choose a galaxy, nebula, star cluster, or the Moon, and the telescope finds, tracks, photographs, and gradually reveals it on your screen.

The newest models make backyard astronomy feel less like operating specialized equipment and more like opening a window into the night sky. The important part is choosing the right kind. A compact 30mm system excels at travel and wide Milky Way scenes; a 50mm model gathers more light for detailed deep-sky targets; and a premium six-inch observatory can produce a different level of image in far less time.

Best Wire-Free Robot Lawn Mowers for Effortless Yard Care

Backyard & Outdoor Living, Outdoor Gear /
Wire-free robotic lawn mower cutting grass in a landscaped backyard while the homeowner relaxes

The biggest improvement in robot lawn mowers is not a sharper blade or a larger battery. It is the disappearance of the perimeter wire. Instead of burying cable around every flower bed, tree, and property edge, today’s wire-free mowers map the lawn with LiDAR, cameras, satellite positioning, or a combination of all three.

That does not mean every new mower suits every yard. A flat quarter-acre lawn needs different technology than a shaded property with mature trees, steep banks, narrow passages, and several disconnected grass zones. The best purchase is the machine whose navigation system matches the conditions outside your own back door.

Best Smart Bird Feeders With Cameras for Backyard Birdwatching

A smart bird feeder is part feeder, part wildlife camera, and part surprise-delivery service. Instead of wondering what visited while you were making coffee, you receive a close-up photo or video on your phone—sometimes before the bird has finished breakfast.

The category has improved quickly. Current models offer sharper video, better solar charging, faster alerts, AI species suggestions, and easier-to-clean seed trays. The less obvious differences matter even more: whether AI requires a subscription, whether the camera works with your home Wi-Fi, how well the feeder resists squirrels, and how much maintenance it needs to remain safe for birds.

Best Heated Camping Chairs for Cold-Weather Comfort

Backyard & Outdoor Living, Outdoor Gear /
Two adults relaxing in heated camping chairs beside a lake on a frosty autumn morning

Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, Time to Get Outside earns from qualifying purchases. Product availability, specifications, and prices can change.

A warm jacket protects the front of your body. A campfire warms whichever side happens to face it. A heated camping chair solves the part people often overlook: the cold that works upward through the seat and into your lower back while you are watching a game, relaxing at a campsite, fishing, or sitting outside on a frosty morning.

The best models are not interchangeable. Some warm both the seat and back, some focus on deep cushioning, and some make more sense for couples than solo campers. We compared four current chairs with clear strengths, useful cold-weather features, and enough structure to remain comfortable even when the heating system is switched off.

Best Portable Projectors for Backyard Movie Nights

Backyard & Outdoor Living, Outdoor Gear /
Portable projector casting a movie onto an outdoor screen during a backyard movie night

Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, Time to Get Outside earns from qualifying purchases. Product availability and prices can change.

A backyard movie night should feel easy: carry out a projector, point it at a screen, press play, and settle into a chair. The reality is that outdoor projection asks a lot from a small device. You need enough brightness after sunset, simple setup, usable sound, reliable streaming, and—in some cases—a battery that lasts through the credits.

We compared four current options that suit different kinds of buyers. The Nebula Mars 3 Air is our best all-around choice, while the XGIMI MoGo 4 is the compact pick. The BenQ GS50 is built for rougher outdoor use, and the plug-in Epson EpiqVision Mini EF22 prioritizes a brighter, more polished patio picture.
