Quick verdict: A lantern provides more practical task light for cooking and organizing gear; string lights are pleasant for atmosphere at an established campsite.
The best buy depends on your own trip and the exact compatibility of the gear, not its headline features. Here is how to make the choice without wasting money.
Who should choose the first option?
A lantern concentrates useful light and can be repositioned for setup, reading or meal preparation. Compare beam diffusion and low-level modes.
When the alternative makes sense
String lights distribute small points of illumination around a sheltered area, but may cause trip hazards and need places to hang.
What to verify before purchasing
Check power source, runtime on usable settings, water resistance, setup effort and campground lighting rules.
Compare exact product versions, current specifications, durability reports, return rules, and US and Canadian prices. Check manufacturer instructions instead of relying on generic marketplace titles.
Drawbacks and safety
Keep cords out of walkways and lights away from tent material if they generate heat. Respect dark-sky and neighbor considerations.
Who should skip an upgrade?
Skip an upgrade if your current equipment already solves the problem without undue risk. Buy only when a change improves practical comfort, reliability, or suitability for the trips you actually take.
Final winner
Buy a reliable lantern first; add string lights for comfort and atmosphere.
