Quick verdict: A waterproof liner inside the pack protects contents more directly from prolonged rain; a cover helps protect the outside but can leak around straps.
Choosing outdoor gear isn’t about getting every possible feature. It’s about finding what handles the conditions you actually expect, without adding unnecessary weight, cost or complexity.
The first option: real advantages and drawbacks
Rain covers reduce direct water on the pack fabric but may flap or slip in wind and leave exposed harness areas.
When the alternative wins
Pack liners isolate sensitive clothing and sleeping gear in a sealed interior barrier; they do not keep pack fabric itself from soaking.
Buying checklist
Check pack volume, seam and closure design, abrasion resistance and whether electronics need their own certified dry storage.
Check the exact model, current manufacturer guidance, warranty and fit to your existing equipment. Compare current local availability and costs separately for US and Canadian orders; do not rely on an old advertised price.
Limits and safety
No method is absolute protection during submersion. Test closures in advance and double-protect essentials.
Who should buy or skip?
Buy when it removes a genuine repeated frustration or makes an outing safer and more comfortable. Skip the upgrade if your current kit performs the job, or if extra gear adds weight without any clear payoff.
Final verdict
For critical dry clothing, prioritize a pack liner; use a cover for additional exterior protection.
